Dick’s carried Tim home to the safety of the Cave and Alfred’s care. Tim is not doing very good….

As for Alfred’s comments about Dick he’s in-between books at this point in time. Dick leaves the Teen Titans in 1993 and only appear in Bat-books now and again after that until he gets his Minis in 1995. Contagion takes place between that and the debut of his Nightwing book, which starts in october 1996. So for lack of a better word, Dick’s in transit. Trying to figure out how to work on his own. He’s left the Teen Titans, is working on his own and in the process of moving to Blûdhaven. Also, bear in mind that Contagion takes place not so long after the Knightfall Saga, in which Dick (and of course Tim) play a big part, what with Dick standing in as Batman for a while.

Happy Father’s Day to a man who really, really deserves it: Alfred Pennyworth.

I could go on and on about how he’s arguably the most integral part of the Bat-family, the glue that holds them together, and how Bruce probably would have died a long time ago if Alfred wasn’t there stitching him up and making sure he got enough sleep and didn’t forget to eat…

I could go on and on and on about how he’s awesome in every form of Batman media (Remember in BTAS when he let himself get arrested in Over the Edge so that Bruce and Tim could escape?) and how he truly loves and cares for Bruce and all of the Robins… Bat-sibs… Bat-kids… whatever you want to call them. Dick, Jason, Tim, Babs, Steph, Cass, Damian…

I could go on forever but I don’t think I need to because everybody has those Alfred moments they remember best, that make them smile because it’s clear what a caring, fatherly man he is.

(We love you, Alfred. Never change.)

I love how Peter Tomasi slipped this little scene in Batman and Robin.  Originally, Nightwing #151 marked the time when Bruce was believed to be dead. Even though Dick, Alfred, and Tim were actually just spending time together like a normal family, there’s obviously that heavy weight from Bruce’s absence.  Making the entire scene sweet, but just depressing.

However, by creating a similar scene in Batman and Robin #20, Tomasi creates this contrast to before and now.  I love how the original scene is transformed into—in my opinion— one of the most heartwarming moments in the Batman franchise. Never, do you see Batman, Alfred, and the Robins (sadly, excluding Jason and Steph) gather together to just watch TV. With Bruce’s return and the addition of Damian, it shows that the Bat family changed and grew.  Now, they were going to take a positive turn— a new chapter or outlook for the Batfam, like what Bruce said in the last page.  And even look at the color scheme, you can see that the B&R pages use lighter colors than Nightwing!

Man, it’s pages like these that are just brilliant.
